Sleep is such a basic need and yet, so many of us struggle with falling asleep or staying asleep.
To be honest, I have struggled with insomnia on and off since the age of 18 and over the years have tried many different approaches to find relief. In my personal experience, the tools that have helped me the most have been found in meditation and yoga.
When I am meditating regularly, 30 or more minutes a day, I sleep much better...mostly because meditation reminds me that I am part of something greater than myself and that I can rest in that.
This leaves me with a sense of equanimity that lasts throughout the day and helps relieve anxiety and a churning mind.
In the yoga tradition, there are so many aspects that are helpful...
Yoga Asanas (poses) to relieve stress and promote relaxation
Pranayama (yogic breathing) that promotes a physiological rest and relax response in the body
Yoga Mudras (hand gestures) that have specific energetic components that signal the central nervous system to slow down
